Seven Boston neighborhoods are compared, and every one of them has a guide and a shortlist on this site, so the answer always leads somewhere. Change any answer above and the table moves with it.

What this tool assumes
Each neighborhood starts level, then gains or loses points against your answers: walking distance to the historic core, the density of restaurants, water views, how residential the streets are, how the area behaves by season, and how easy it is to reach from Logan or the convention centre. The budget slider shifts the weighting rather than filtering, so an area that is expensive across the board loses points at the lower settings. The same budget setting then decides which hotels we put in front of you inside the winning neighborhood.
The Seaport is scored together with the Waterfront, because that is how our guide covers the harbor front, from Battery Wharf round to Fort Point. Two neighborhoods, Dorchester and Allston / Brighton, have a guide but no hotel reviewed on the site yet: when one of them wins, we say so and show the closest hotels we have actually stayed on top of instead of pretending otherwise.
These are editorial judgements from our own reporting on Boston hotels, not a price database. They are a starting point for a decision, not a substitute for checking a specific hotel.
Questions people ask
Which area is best for a first trip to Boston?
Most first-time visitors do well in Downtown or Back Bay: both put you inside walking distance of the Freedom Trail, the Public Garden and the main transit lines, which removes most of the friction from a short stay.
Is it worth staying on the Waterfront or in the Seaport?
The harbor front is newer, flatter and more spacious, with water on one side and a strong restaurant scene. It suits work trips, conventions and anyone who wants modern rooms; it is a longer walk to the historic sights.
Where do I stay for a game at Fenway?
Tick the Fenway box and the tool leans towards Back Bay and Allston / Brighton, the two areas within easy reach of the ballpark. Our nearest reviewed hotel is in Kenmore, about eight minutes on foot from the gate.
Do I need a car in Boston?
Rarely, and parking is one of the more expensive parts of a stay. Boston rewards walking, and the T covers the rest. A car only starts to make sense if you are planning day trips out of the city, which is when the outer neighborhoods start to score.
