East Boston is the neighborhood across the harbor from downtown, and for most visitors it means one thing: Logan Airport. Its hotels are built for early flights and late arrivals, with free shuttles to the terminals, but the neighborhood behind them, with its Latin American bakeries, harbor parks and skyline views, is worth a look if you have an evening to spare.

The neighborhood beyond the airport
Walk up from Maverick Square to Meridian and Bennington Streets and East Boston becomes a residential neighborhood of row houses, family restaurants and bakeries, with strong Latin American and Italian roots. Piers Park, on Marginal Street near Maverick, has one of the best views of the downtown skyline across the water, and the East Boston Greenway runs from there toward Bremen Street Park. None of the airport hotels is in this residential part, so plan a short taxi or Blue Line ride to explore it.
Getting downtown, and to Cambridge
The Blue Line is the quickest link: from Airport station it reaches Aquarium and Government Center in a few stops, and from Maverick, Aquarium is the next stop. The Embassy Suites is next to Airport station; from the other hotels, use the hotel or Massport shuttles. Boston Water Taxi crosses the harbor on demand in about 15 minutes, depending on stops. For Cambridge, Harvard or MIT, change from the Blue Line to the Red Line at Downtown Crossing via the Orange Line, or at Park Street via the Green Line; if your trip is mostly there, a hotel in Cambridge or central Boston will save time.

East Boston suits travelers with an early flight or a late arrival, anyone ending a New England road trip at Logan, and drivers who want cheaper parking than downtown. It suits first-time visitors less if they plan to spend every day on the Freedom Trail, in the museums or on Newbury Street: a central hotel puts all of that on foot.
